Exploring Organizational Cognition
Routledge book workshop
Slagelse, 23-24 January 2020
What the project is about
We have a project to publish a book to spell out our view on organizational cognition. The ambitious aim is to define cognition both normatively and descriptively by questioning its role and functions while at work in organizations. This necessarily brings in a social perspective that is not necessarily grounded on any of the employees or managers who perform their job.
This perspective is, on the one hand, breaking with the individualist view that has been dominant in the studies of cognition in organizations. On the other hand, it also breaks with traditional and less traditional cognitive science, that has long forgotten the role of human social functionality. The aim is to re-set the boundaries of cognition by explaining its working in its most natural environment: the organization.

At the same time, the book is a statement from those who conduct research on cognition at the University of Southern Denmark, especially those active at the Centre for Computational and Organizational Cognition (CORG) in Slagelse. This will outline a research agenda and present a series of achievements, drawing on existing research. More than the members of CORG, we are inviting other researchers from SDU that have a long standing tradition in the study of cognition as well as a number of colleagues from international institutions.

There are three editors for this project, Stephen J. Cowley, Rasmus Gahrn-Andersen, and Davide Secchi, and the book proposal will be submitted to Routledge as soon as the Workshop is over. We have a preliminary understanding with the publishing company.
